Sorry, I’m busy opening up the Grammys.

Taylor Swift’s performance opening the Grammy awards last night has certainly got people talking – and not for the right reasons. Ignoring the impressive showmanship and circus-themed performance, the focus was held on one single line in the song, spoken in a British accent (or at least a rather bad attempt at one), ‘I still love you‘.

The song – We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together – is thought to have been written about John Mayer, though last night’s performance links it her much more recent relationship with One Direction singer Harry Styles. With One Direction fans slating the singer since it was first revealed that the two were together, her performance was being criticised on the likes of twitter and tumblr by this fanbase anyway. Using a British accent for the line – the surrounding section being; “Uggg… so he calls me up and he’s like, ‘I still love you‘, and I’m like… I just… I mean this is exhausting, you know, like, we are never getting back together. Like ever.” – seemed to push Harry’s fans over the edge, as she clearly mocked her ex live in-front of millions of people all over the world.

I’m a fan of Taylor’s, even if she seems a bit irresponsible with regards to how quickly she seems to grow attached to someone. I remember reading an article where she’d started to plan her wedding to Harry whilst they were together – though this was from Perez Hilton and I take what he writes about as seriously as I’d take instructions from Hitler about how to be more understanding of different ethnicities. Is that too far? Probably. But the point stands. After heavy criticism of the number of relationships she has from magazines, websites and anybody else who likes to make their opinion known, I think it’s only fair that Taylor gets her point across while she can, even if it ends up being on national television. It was a line in a song, spoken in a bad British accent. It may make Harry feel a little humiliated, but I’m sure he – like any other of her ex’s – can make himself feel better by wiping his tears away with £50 notes and looking at his own impressive list of musical achievements.

Taylor has admitted on countless occasions that if you piss her off (I’m paraphrasing, of course) she’ll put you into a song – a fact people saw as light humour at the beginning of her career, though now seen as more of a threat to any future boyfriends of the star who might forget how she likes her coffee and end up in a number one song as a result – and what she did during her performance last night is really no different. Sure, it’s going to take Styles’ army of dedicated followers a while to get over what they probably consider to be the most controversial and upsetting incident ever in the history of music (like, ever), but for the rest of us, it’s no big deal and probably something that’s going to be forgotten in a week.

Which is unfortunate, because I thought it was freakin’ hilarious.
